Governance and Administration

  • The 2004 slate of candidates for ASLA office has been selected.
    - 2005 President-Elect:  Dennis B. Carmichael, FASLA; and C. Edward Curtin, ASLA.
    - 2005-06 Vice President, Finance:  Donald Leary, ASLA; and   Dwight Weatherford, FASLA.
    - 2005-06 Vice President, Information and Professional Practice:      Vaughn B. Rinner, ASLA; and Robert B. Tilson, ASLA.
    - 2005-06 Vice President, Membership:  Judy Byrd Brittenum, FASLA; and William T. Eubanks III, ASLA.

  • President Jacobson, President-elect Miller, and ASLA staff met with Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) representatives to share information and address issues concerning coordination of LAF and ASLA Fund activities.  ASLA will use “ASLA Fund” in place of the “LEAF” acronym; to alleviate concerns that “LEAF” was being confused with “LAF.”

  • EVP Nancy Somerville met with American Planning Association (APA) Executive Director W. Paul Farmer, AICP, on December 18 to discuss ASLA and APA initiatives, including security design initiatives and a joint lobby day in 2005.

  • Vice President Amy Schneckenburger, FASLA, represented ASLA at the November “Joint Ventures:  Partnerships in Stewardship Conference.”  Representatives of the seven primary federal land management agencies, attended the conference.  This first-time gathering gave over 1,600 attendees a unique opportunity to learn what makes partnerships work, hear success stories, and gain skills to bring back to their organizations.  http://www.partnerships2003.org/home.html

  • The House and Senate have recessed for the holidays and are expected to return January 20.  When they return, the Senate will consider the House-passed FY04 omnibus appropriations bill, which includes FY04 transportation funding.   Another issue that will be taken up in both houses after the recess is TEA-21 reauthorization.  ASLA continues to work with allies to press for key legislative priorities in both the TEA-21 reauthorization and omnibus appropriations bills.

  • The radio public service announcements (PSA) are still being aired after seven months.   Each PS A promotes the ASLA website and Firm Finder as a resource for finding a landscape architect.  Since May, the PS As have aired on 482 radio stations in 45 states with an audience of 95,081,878 listeners

  • Promotion continues for the 2004 annual meeting.   The meetings area of the website ( www.asla.org/meetings/am2004/saltlake.htm) has been populated with the first group of materials including a welcome letter from President Jacobson and information for prospective exhibitors; information on available sponsorships will be incorporated next.  The education session Call for Proposals is available on the website ( www.asla.org/meetings/am2004/cfp) with a submission deadline of January 30, 2004

  • The list of members eligible for the 2004 Fellows Call for Nominations was emailed on December 19 to all chapter presidents and executive directors.   The Call for Nominations process will begin in early February with a deadline of May 7, 2004. To nominate someone for Fellow, contact Wanner Associates or any member of the executive committee.

  • The January 2004 Landscape Architecture highlights are posted online (http://www.asla.org/nonmembers/lam.cfm).  Read Allen Freeman's article “Meadowland:
Back to (Controlled) Nature on Maryland's Eastern Shore” online and excerpts from “Balancing Acts: What Happens when a Prairie Style Landscape is Reshaped as a Contemporary Suburb?” by Mary Kay Wilcox, ASLA, and “Mission Statement:  A privately Owned Public Space Forms Part of an Urban Renaissance in San Francisco's South of Market Area” by Mark Hinshaw.

  • Following appearance of an obituary in the December 12 issue of LAND Online, ASLA is collecting and will publish reminiscences of Robert W. Pierson.
