September 2003
September 10, 2003
- ASLA and our coalition partners have scored a huge victory in the fight to maintain enhancement funding in the FY04 transportation appropriation bill. The amendment passed 327-90, thanks in large part to your grass-roots advocacy efforts. The record of the House of Representatives vote on the Petri amendment can be viewed at: http://clerkweb.house.gov/cgi-bin/vote.exe?year=2003&rollnumber=469.
- Passage of the reauthorization bill for TEA-21, which expires on September 30, 2003 , is not likely this year. Both the House and the Senate are working on extension language now. It is expected to be a six-month extension with a possible year extension after that.
- ASLA sponsored three security design sessions at the second Annual Congress on Infrastructure Security for the Built Environment, September 16-18, in Washington, D.C. Sponsored by The Infrastructure Security Partnership (TISP), sessions sponsored by ASLA included: Security Design: Between the Building and the Street; Protecting Landmarks and Monuments; and Design Elements of Effective Security Plans. For session descriptions, visit https://www.agc.org/content/public/pdf/Member_Resources/2003tisp_schedule.pdf .
- ASLA continues to push for restoration of the Urban Parks and Recreation Recovery program (UPARR) funding and initiation of funding for the Historic American Landscape Survey (HALS) in the FY04 Interior appropriations bill. On the House side, money was not included for either UPARR or HALS and is not currently included in the Senate bill. ASLA is working to get Senators to sponsor an amendment on one or both issues.
- Past president Leonard J. Hopper, FASLA, represented ASLA in a series of radio interviews on the topic of security design on Tuesday morning, September 9, 2003 . The popularity of the topic resulted in two additional interviews. Five national networks, one statewide network, and 14 individual stations interviewed Hopper for live and taped broadcasts. The schedule is available at: http://www.asla.org/nonmembers/publicrelations/radio.html.
- As of Sept. 10, 480 full registrations and 71 spouse registrations were received for the 2003 Annual Meeting. An early-bird deadline reminder was emailed to all members, stressing the $100 savings for registrations received by September 22.
