Former ASLA National President Dies

Celebrate National Health Education Week with the PA Advocates for Nutrition & Activity (PANA)
In response to the epidemic of overweight and sedentary children and adolescents, The Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition and Activity (PANA), is working to mobilize school communities through an initiative entitled Pennsylvania Action for Healthy Kids (PA AFHK). PA AFHK is part of the nationwide effort dedicated to improving the health and academic performance of children through better nutrition and physical activity in schools.

  • All chapters will have to adapt and adopt the new chapter model constitution and bylaws before the Salt Lake City annual meeting in October. A PA/DE ASLA committee is currently working on the rewrite, and expects to have it completed in the very near future. Adoption of the new chapter constitution requires a ballot of all Fellows and Full Members in good standing. As a result, a request for approval of the revised constitution and bylaws will be on the ballot for Chapter Officers which is to be mailed in May. Please take the time to become familiar with them, as they affect many aspects of your membership.

  • ASLA met with the Federal Highway Administration’s Office of Planning to discuss the Transportation Planning Capacity Building Program and how ASLA can work more closely with DOT on planning issues.

  • ASLA met with Senate appropriations staff to discuss HALS funding for FY 2005. Senator Landrieu has agreed to champion HALS funding again this year.

  • The Senate passed an extension of TEA-21 before the February 29 deadline. The House did likewise. Both versions protect programs like the congestion mitigation and air quality program and the transportation enhancement program. Please see the LAND Online for more details.

  • ASLA will host a Security Design Symposium in Chicago, IL July 25-27. APA and AIA are co-sponsoring the event. The Request for Proposals has been released and the deadline for receipt of proposals is March 15, 2004. The steering committee for the symposium, chaired by Past President Len Hopper, FASLA, has begun discussing planning details.   • A news release announcing ASLA has declared April as National Landscape Architecture Month was sent to local, national, and industry media on Tuesday, March 2.   • Staff assisted arts and design Editor Cathleen McGuigan on her column appearing in the March 1 issue of Newsweek (circulation 3,248,097) and on MSNBC.com (16,661,000 visits per month).   • Past President Rodney L. Swink, FASLA will present a lecture on downtown revitalization and historic preservation at the National Building Museum on Monday, August 23, 2004. Staff is working with the NBM to schedule and promote lectures by landscape architects. Richard Haag, FASLA, will speak on April 12 and Leonard Hopper, FASLA, will speak on June 1.

  • Public Relations worked with ConstrucTECH, an industry trade publication with a circulation of 59,950, to promote the ASLA Graduating Student Survey in its February 2004 issue.

  • A full-page, four-color ad will appear in the April issue of Architectural Record promoting subscriptions to Landscape Architecture magazine.

  • The 2003 Annual Report brochure will be mailed to members in early March. The brochure includes program highlights from the year, information on ASLA Fund projects, and instructions on accessing affinity partner benefits and discounts. A business reply envelope will be enclosed to encourage members to contribute to the three ASLA Fund projects (National Salary Survey, Business Indicators Survey, and study of the economic value of landscape architecture).

  • The 2004 annual meeting proposal review was conducted by the Steering Committee on February 28 in Salt Lake City. The committee selected 55 sessions and 6 education sessions with mobile components, a new education format. The Utah Chapter has put together 17 tours. Exhibitors are being solicited for the mini-shop sessions. Two keynote speakers have been signed: Terry Tempest Williams for the Opening General Session and Steve Uzzell for the Sunday General Session.

  • The Council of Fellows call for nominations and sample submissions have been posted on the website at http://www.asla.org/Members/FASLA.htm. The deadline for submitting nominations is Friday, May 7.

  • Nominations for the ASLA Medal, the ASLA Design Medal, the Jot D. Carpenter Teaching Medal, the LaGasse
    Medals, the Landscape Architecture Medal of Excellence, the Olmsted Medal, and the ASLA Firm Award
