- ASLA has begun contacting chapters to update the LARE review session information on ASLA Online. Check ASLA Website for updated info.
- An article about professional and trade magazines in the January-February 2004 issue of Utne magazine features the cover of the November 2003 issue of Landscape Architecture magazine (LAM) and notes LAM's coverage of urban design issues.
- Nominations are now open for the ASLA Medal, the ASLA Design Medal, the Jot D. Carpenter Teaching Medal, the LaGasse Medals, the Landscape Architecture Medal of Excellence, the Olmsted Medal, and the ASLA Firm Award. This year, a letter of intent to submit a nomination will be the first step in the process so that the Honors and Awards Advisory Committee can ensure qualified candidates are nominated in each category. The sample letter of intent is posted on the ASLA web site and the deadline is COB January 30, 2004 . The nominations packages are due by COB March 19, 2004 . - The Call for Entries brochure for the ASLA Professional Awards, the Community Service Award, and the Landmark Award will be mailed with the February issue of LAM. Members will also be notified via email, LAND Online, and ASLA Online to be on the lookout for the brochure or to access the information online.
- Leonard J. Hopper, FASLA, and Warren Byrd, ASLA, were interviewed for the Fall 2003 issue of Multifamily Trends (a publication of the Urban Land Institute): http://urbanland.uli.org/DK/MFTrends/ur_MFTrends_fst.html.
- 2003 was a banner year for ASLA membership, topping out at 14,231 members—an incredible 7-percent growth from 2002 year-end totals. Corporate membership grew by an amazing 36 percent, students by 20 percent, and full members by a very respectable 5 percent.
- A broadcast email was sent to members on December 22 announcing the start of the education session Call for Proposals process. The Call for Proposals information is available on the website at ( www.asla.org/meetings/am2004/cfp) with a submission deadline of January 30, 2004.
January 21, 2004
- ASLA will is planning the next Security in Design Conference. It is scheduled for July 25-27 in Chicago . The American Planning Association will cosponsor the conference.
- Leadership Development Committee co-chairs Bill Eubanks, ASLA, and Bob Callans, FASLA, and staff met to talk about developing additional workshop segments covering spokesperson training and political advocacy.
- EVP Nancy Somerville met with National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Executive Director John Thorner on January 16 to discuss common issues and opportunities.
- ASLA has been working with the Surface Transportation Policy Project to draft legislative language that would increase public participation in the transportation planning process and could be inserted into the TEA-21 reauthorization bills. ASLA is also supporting maintenance of the protections of 4(F) review in transportation projects that impact historical sites and is advocating for safe routes to school, a new program currently in both reauthorization bills. Both the House and the Senate expect to take up debate on the reauthorization bills by mid February. The extension for TEA-21 expires on February 29, 2004 . - The ASLA 2004 Awards Call for Entries (CFE) is printed and will be delivered to all Landscape Architecture magazine subscribers with the February issue. The CFE will be available online at http://www.asla.org/Members/awdcrit.htm on January 28, 2004.
- "Meadowland," from the January issue of Landscape Architecture magazine, was featured in the January 8 issue of PLANetizen.com.
- A membership retention mailing will be sent to all members in February. It will include a letter from the President, a mini-annual report, including information on affinity benefits and ASLA Fund projects, and a business reply envelope that recipients can use to mail contributions to the special projects fund. Afterwards, the report will be included in new member packets.
- The next issue of the ASLA Business Quarterly will be sent this month to Firm Finder Enhanced Profile Subscribers and Corporate Members.
- The Green Roofs for Healthy Cities coalition is planning a local green roofs workshop for the Washington , D.C., metro area on Thursday, April 29, 2004 . ASLA Staff and the Potomac Chapter are preparing suggestions for the program. The goal of the workshop is to sell public officials, civic leaders, and the business community on the value of green roofs and how they can alleviate particular local problems. This will be the first of a series of U.S. programs the coalition is planning.
- The 2003 ASLA Annual Meeting Abstracts (formerly Proceedings) are now posted on ASLA Online. Login and select the Members Only Section to access. (www.asla.org)
- The highlights of the February 2004 issue of Landscape Architecture magazine are posted online at http://www.asla.org/nonmembers/lam.cfm. Be sure to read the full text feature article “Engaging Estate, Hither Lane pulls you into its masterful private realm” by Allen Freeman online.
- The Student Services Committee has been meeting monthly and working tirelessly to revise the student awards guidelines and entry form in response to comments and suggestions from committee members, students, faculty and jurors. The call for entries will go out to the program chairs by the end of January.
