PA-DE ASLA Norristown Community Greening

On Saturday, April 21, 2012, in honor of Landscape Architecture month and Earth Day, Eastern Section members of the PA-DE Chapter of ASLA worked side-by-side with community leaders, municipal authorities, and area residents to spread soil and plant a 15' wide by 120' long property frontage at a prominent corner of downtown Norristown.  This was no small feat, and we are very thankful for all who contributed to the effort!

Community explores Horace Mann playground upgrades

Perhaps one of the most important things to emerge from Saturday's Horace Mann Elementary School Playground Charette was an explanation of the term "charette."

"It's a fancy French word for brainstorming," said Nick Karas, the daylong planning session's host and a member of the Indiana Neighborhood Community Association, which organized the session.

Wheatland/Campus of History Tour

During the PA-DE ASLA Annual Meeting last month, one of the tours was to the residence of President James Buchanan, Wheatland, which is in the middle of a major expansion. The tour concentrated on the construction measures used to limit impacts on this historic site. 100_2226.jpg

Green Infrastructure & Landscape Architecture

Green infrastructure can be considered a conceptual framework for understanding the valuable services nature provides the human environment. Landscape architects use nature to manage water from storms, create new wildlife habitat, and make the built environment greener. At all scales, green infrastructure provides real ecological, economic, and social benefits.
